Il mestiere di vivere

Diario 1935-1950

Begun on 6 October 1935 during the days of political confinement, the diary accompanies Cesare Pavese until 18 August 1950, nine days before his death, and gradually becomes the place to which he can entrust his thoughts on his world as a writer and of man and, above all, the final confessions on those intimate dramas that tore apart his existence.

Bitter, desperate, violent, ironic, rarely serene, Pavese gives the reader a meditation on life, dreams, memories and art conducted with intellectual and moral rigor; and at the same time, page after page, lucidly testifies to his incessant poetic-literary self-edification, the evolution of a personal profession of living.
